A Family Business
Based in Millmerran on Queensland’s Southern Darling Downs
Sean O’Hanlon has worked with some of the world’s greatest horsemen.
-
In 1992, after spending two years studying at Longreach Pastoral College, Sean travelled with Graeme Ward all over the top end of Australia.
Sean worked alongside Graeme at many, many colt-starting, horsemanship and horse shoeing schools
During this time, Sean spent a lot of time around very green horses in numbers.
Through this experience, he learned a lot about how to understand where those horses were at and how to be of help to them - not a hinderance.
-
After finishing with Graeme, Sean worked for John Quintana on Waterloo Station in the NT.
John took Sean to the USA in January 1993 and introduced him to Greg Ward and the world-famous Ward Ranch.
-
Sean flew into California in January 1993 and began working for Greg Ward and his son John Ward at the Ward Ranch in Tulare, California
“Greg Ward rode a horse differently to everyone I had ever met and his horses did things differently to anyone else’s horses I’d ever seen,” says Sean.
Greg genuinely loved his horses and was called “The Master” for good reason.
“Til this day, I have still never seen anyone else that could do what Greg Ward could do. People would stop what they were doing just to watch Greg.”
-
Greg’s son John, also an incredible horseman, became a mentor and role model to Sean during his time at Ward Ranch.
“I learned more in those three years than I could have ever imagined.”
John and Sean named Ozzy Cat together - John being an Ozzy Osbourne fan and Sean being Australian.
In 2021, Sean brought Ozzy Cat home to Australia.
-
It was at the Ward Ranch that Sean met and worked with arguably the greatest horseman of modern times in the world, Tom Dorrance.
“Tom was an incredibly intelligent, soft, kind and thoughtful man that had an approach to his life and his horses that was about true unity,” says Sean.
“Tom had no ego and I suspect while he had an undeniable respect for himself, he was only ever in it for the horse.”
Without trying, Tom Dorrance was a great role model and a wonderful human being.
Meet Sean
Sean has spent his entire adult life in pursuit of great horsemanship.
The middle son of a great all-round horseman and many times national cutting horse champion, Terry O’Hanlon, Sean was lucky enough to be around great horsemen his entire life.
Through his father’s contacts, Sean travelled the world many times working for and studying under many of the best known horsemen of all time.
Sean has a real passion for teaching and loves working with people in need of help.
Sean and his wife Natasha raise their two beautiful daughters, Audrey and Maggie, on their family property outside of Millmerran in Queensland, Australia.
Meet Natasha
Natasha was born and raised outside Springsure in Central Queensland.
Amongst the day to day chores of life on a horse property, Natasha spends her time trying to catch her two daughters Audrey and Maggie, as they too are learning about the fun and values of life on an operating horse property.
Natasha is an amazing cook and loves baking so her husband won’t get too skinny!
“Good horsemanship is simple…but it’s not easy.”
Greg Ward
It runs in the family…
Sean’s parents, Terry and Kate, also live on the family’s property outside Millmerran in Queensland.
Sean’s dad Terry has competed in many disciplines including Cutting, Campdrafting, Working Cowhorse, Rodeo and Polocrosse, to mention just a few.
With a specific interest in the sport of Cutting, Terry was instrumental in the development of the sport in the early days. Terry was also instrumental in developing Sprint Racing in Australia and also served as president of the AQHA.
Terry was also the founder of many large events across the greater Australian horse industry.
Terry won three National Cutting Horse titles, his training techniques and approach have since been considered to have been before their time
A new generation
Sean and Natasha are blessed to be the loving parents of two beautiful daughters, Audrey and Maggie.
Whilst it seems that Audrey and Maggie don’t always see eye to eye with the world of, “slow down and behave please,” they certainly do love being around their horses and helping out with feeding up.
They both seem to love the mares and foals and have a terrific ability to name a horse the moment it’s born.
“We’re truly thankful and blessed to enjoy two such incredible children.”
